Welcome to the Stock Market Game!!
Starting on October 7, our classes will play the Stock Market Game (SMG) for 10 weeks. In teams of three to five students, we will be investing $100,000 per team in stocks that are traded on one of three stock exchanges that exist in the U.S.--the New York Stock Exchange, NASDAQ and the American Exchange. We are playing this game through the Georgia Council on Economic Education (GCEE).

Basic Rules of the Game:

Here are the highlights, but you are responsible for knowing the rules:
++$100,000 to Invest for 10 Weeks on three exchanges:
1. NYSE: Oldest stock exchange in the U.S., founded in 1792. Stocks are still traded on the floor. Traditionally for large corporations with large volumes of shares.
2. AMEX: Located in New York, handles about 10% of all securities exchange. Has mostly small-cap stocks, exchange-traded funds and derivatives.
3. NASDAQ: An electronic marketplace enabling buyers and sellers to get together via computer to trade stocks. Traditionally high-tech firms that are very active. Created in 1971.
++Must Purchase Minimum of 100 Shares
++Minimum Share Price of $5
++All transactions will be made at the 4 pm Closing Price (not real-time)++Purchase a stock before end of third week
++Must purchase at least three stocks
++Must hold three stocks for a minimum of 3 weeks

How to read and interpret stock tables and charts:
In order to get the information about companies that you will need to make your investing decisions, you will do on-line research to learn about publicly traded companies. Most websites that contain stock information will give data on the company in graphs, tables and narratives. To help you interpret the tabular and graphical data, check out the following website: http://www.investopedia.com/university/stocks/stocks6.asp
How to interpret your SMG account portfolio:
Once you are logged in to the game website, you will be able to view your account summary, transaction history, account holdings and other information about your team's performance in the game. In order to interpret your account portfolio, you will need to read the following .pdf that shows what the various portfolio functions on the SMG website.

SMG Assignments:
You will receive a 150-point project grade for your work in the Stock Market Game. Every student will turn in their own portfolio and will receive individual grades for this project--there will be no group grades. Also, your portfolio grade will not be dependent upon the amount your team gains or loses in the game. You will turn in your assignments to turnitin.com, so be sure to put them all in a word document.
SMG Portfolio assignments and grades are as follows:
I. Vocabulary: 20 points (define terms and use each term in a sentence; see below for terms)
II. Industry Research: 20 points (only one industry research profile is required); see below for requirements for industry research.

IV. Current Events--Find an article from a trusted news source (either print or on-line) that deals with a stock market (domestic or foreign), stock-market trends, or a particular company's stock and write a three-paragraph summary of the article in your own words. You may not simply copy and paste the text of the article as your summary. Note that if you plagiarize, you will earn a zero. You must cite your sources--be sure to give the title and author of the article, along with the publication. You may submit a copy of the article or you may include a copy of the URL address where I can find the article on line.
